Empowered Native

An adapted screenplay by Andrew Smith – from the novel The Empowered Native by Letepe Maisela Lerumo Sekhukhuni – aged sixteen, was one of small cadre of radical schoolboys who in June 1976 convinced thousands of their fellow school children to challenge the South African Apartheid Government and demonstrate against the compulsory introduction of Afrikaans, as an alternative to English, as the primary language for educating black Africans. Their protest was brutally crushed by a militarised police force, which dismissed their educational aspirations with contempt. Forced to flee to Botswana, Lerumo is drawn to the political wing of the ANC and is sent to Russia to train as an engineer – where after graduating he joins the diplomatic wing of the Movement in England. For the next sixteen years Lerumo does his duty and dreams of returning to the homeland of his father’s – a dream that finally comes to fruition with the release of Mandela. But he quickly discovers that the homeland of his dreams is not the homeland of reality and he finds that his conscience will not allow him to lay down his spear and pick up the scattered pieces of his life – not until he has uncovered the fate of the other young radicals who took to the streets and martyred their youths during those fateful weeks in June – a generation before. This was a quest, which Lerumo knew was never going to be black and white – but even he was not prepared for the heart wrenching stories of those who died and those who ran on that fateful day. On that day heroes and cowards, spies and police informers – all became brothers, bound by history – in the bloody wake of a nation about to be reborn.
